Why Evergreen Nature School?

Learning and personal growth are not limited to the classroom — they are born from real experiences, connection, and exploration. Yet today, many children spend most of their days indoors, disconnected from the very world that was once their greatest teacher. Without time in nature — climbing trees, digging in the dirt, or exploring with friends — children miss essential opportunities to develop resilience, creativity, and emotional balance.

At Evergreen Nature School, we’re reclaiming what childhood is meant to be — a time of curiosity, courage, and connection. Our mission is to bring nature back to the child by creating space and time for unhurried, meaningful learning. Through daily outdoor exploration and hands-on discovery, children at Evergreen develop the self-confidence, adaptability, and empathy that come from learning in real, living environments.

Unlike traditional early education programs, Evergreen does not confine learning to four walls. The forest, field, and stream become our classrooms. We embrace risky play, child-led curiosity, and nature’s rhythms as our guides — because we know that true growth happens when children face challenges, find solutions, and experience their own strength.

In a rapidly changing world, Evergreen children learn to stay grounded — to meet uncertainty with creativity, compassion, and courage. We believe this is how we nurture a generation ready to care for themselves, each other, and the earth.

“Children cannot bounce off the walls if we take away the walls.”

– Erin Kenny

What is Nature Deficit Disorder?

according to author Richard Lauv

“Nature-deficit disorder” is not a medical diagnosis, but a useful term—a metaphor—to describe what many of us believe are the human costs of alienation from nature: diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties, higher rates of physical and emotional illnesses, a rising rate of myopia, child and adult obesity, Vitamin D deficiency, and other maladies.
